Learning the Alexander Technique
Learning the Alexander Technique is like learning any skill, such as playing a musical instrument or playing golf; one needs an expert teacher to teach the new skills so that they can be incorporated into one's own practice and understanding. This is the real value of the Alexander Technique; you become able to apply its principles, by yourself, to your daily activities.
After one-to-one lessons most people notice immediate improvement and with regular lessons you will effect permanent change. The combination of gentle hands and instruction guide you in normal activities like sitting, standing or walking to improve any movements that give you trouble. You learn to rest constructively, move more mindfully and change unhelpful old habits for the better. The number of lessons you require depends on your individual needs and goals. I normally advise six weekly lessons at first. The important thing is to take regular lessons, even if you can't attend weekly. You need to wear loose clothing, preferably trousers, and will be asked to remove shoes, if appropriate. |
